For the first time in 40 years, Red Stitch will present the entire trilogy on 20 June 2026 — performed back-to-back in a single day by one ensemble, just as Lawler intended.
Lauded as a defining monument of 20th-century Australian theatre, Ray Lawler’s The Doll Trilogy charts the transformation of a nation through the intimate lives of Roo, Barney, Olive, Nancy, and those around them.
Lawler’s masterful writing brings working-class Melbourne to life with warmth, humour, and sensitivity, beautifully realised by Red Stitch. From the playful romance of Kid Stakes in 1937, through the war-shadowed years of Other Times, to the shattering finale of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll in 1953, these characters embody idealism, disappointment, and resilience against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Australia.
Whether you’re encountering Lawler’s characters for the first time or revisiting them with fresh eyes, The Doll Trilogy promises an unforgettable theatrical journey - one that speaks to who we were, who we are, and how the past continues to shape us.

PART 1: KID STAKES - 1937
Set in Depression-era Carlton, Kid Stakes captures the optimism of a nation on the cusp of change and kicks off the 17-year journey of Roo, Barney, Olive, and Nancy. Queensland cane croppers Roo and Barney spend their off-season in Melbourne, where they meet Olive and Nancy, two young women on the brink of adulthood. A summer ritual begins with Roo’s gift of a kewpie doll, as Bubba watches and Emma offers her wry wisdom.
PART 2: OTHER TIMES - 1945
The war is over, but its impact lingers. Roo and Barney return to a changed world, Bubba grows up, and Emma embraces new possibilities. When a German-Jewish refugee arrives, Australia’s shifting views on migration come into focus. Tender, gritty, and humorous, Other Times explores fractured loyalties, evolving roles for women, and the tension between freedom and responsibility in a society emerging from upheaval.
PART 3: SUMMER OF THE SEVENTH DOLL - 1953
For sixteen summers, Roo and Barney have shared laughter, love, and freedom with Olive and Nancy. But this seventeenth feels different. Nancy’s gone, Roo is tired, Barney restless, and Olive determined to live on her own terms. Emma sees how choices echo across generations, Bubba craves her moment, and Pearl, Nancy’s replacement, becomes the catalyst for a reckoning.
